Miami Institute of Latin American Studies

Pilot Program

The Pilot Program will take place July 2-27, 2007, and will be hosted at the Historical Museum of Southern Florida and the Caribbean in Downtown Miami. Students meet from 10am to 3pm on Tuesday through Friday at the Historical Museum. There will be 24 MAST student participants who will be selected based on demonstrated academic achievement and interest in Latin American Studies. They will each attend two academic seminars taught by four FIU Latin American Studies students. The program also utilizes film and current events research as sources of academic knowledge. MAST students will receive about 75 community service hours for participating and there will be two scholarships awarded to those students who are exceptionally committed to the mission of MILAS.

Students will be provided with metro-passes and a small snack for each day of the program. They will be expected to ride public transportation when the program makes excursions into Miami's main ethnic communities. Students will tour and perform community service in Little Havana, Little Haiti, and Sweetwater. The structure of the program is designed to teach the students how to work as a cohesive group; they will work with representatives from the school board to develop their strategy for advocating for the incorporation of Latin American Studies in the public school curriculum.
