Welcome
In 2007 the Miami Institute of Latin American Studies was founded to generate scholastic interest in the social, historical, and cultural heritage brought to Miami by waves of immigrants from Central and South America and the Caribbean.
During its pilot program, MILAS will offer high school students from Miami-Dade County Public Schools' MAST Academy an interdisciplinary program that explores Miami's multiethnic and multicultural make-up. After three weeks of seminar classes, film screenings, current events research, and community excursions, the students will be charged with advocating for broad incorporation of Latin American Studies into the Miami-Dade County Public Schools curriculum.
MILAS seeks to create a place within academia to celebrate Miami's cultural and historic ties to Latin America and the Caribbean and to provide a framework that ties academic learning to lived experience.
